Operation Principle

A sine-wave filter for VFD is essential for achieving smooth motor operation when using modern variable frequency drives. VFDs generate high-frequency PWM voltage, which causes steep dv/dt spikes, bearing currents, electromagnetic noise, and winding stress.

A sine wave output filter converts this PWM waveform into a clean sinusoidal voltage, significantly enhancing motor life, reducing heating, and improving overall drive reliability.
Unlike traditional VFD harmonic filters, which only manage input-side harmonics, output sinewave filters directly address the harmful effects of high-frequency switching.

They reduce voltage stress on insulation systems, minimize acoustic noise, and eliminate the risk of premature motor failure. Our filters also improve system reliability in long cable VFD solutions where the distance between the drive and motor can exceed 100–200 meters.

Hitron Winders manufactures advanced 415V sinewave filters and 690V sinewave filters designed for industrial drives, compressors, blowers, pumps, and textile machinery. All models support global quality standards and are engineered as IEEE-519 compliant filters, ensuring consistent harmonic performance and motor protection across a wide range of loads.

Why Sine-wave Filters Are Required for VFD Motors

VFDs operate using high-frequency switching (typically 2–16 kHz). This introduces several challenges:

  1. High dv/dt spikes

PWM pulses create voltage peaks up to 1200–1600V even in a 415V system. This damages motor insulation and causes overheating.

  2. Bearing currents & erosion                                                                                                       High-frequency currents travel through the motor shaft, damaging bearings.

  3. EMI & acoustic noise                                                                                                                    PWM signals produce audible noise and electromagnetic interference.

  4. Long cable reflection issues                                                                                                        For cable lengths > 50m, reflected waves multiply voltage peaks and damage motors.                                                                                                                                                                     A sine-wave filter for VFD eliminates these problems by delivering a smooth sinusoidal waveform to the motor.
